If your organization uses Power BI, you can easily display your Power BI visualizations in Carousel 7
Power BI Requirements
Start by generating a URL in Power BI using the Publish to Web feature.* If you're not sure how to do this, please refer to your Power BI administrator. Here are some instructions for publishing a URL: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-publish-to-web
*Please be aware that while the communication between Power BI and Carousel Cloud will be over a secure channel (TLS/https), anyone who has the secret Power BI URL will be able to view the visualization published at that URL without logging in. Be sure to treat this URL securely, as if it was a password. Do not share this URL with anyone who shouldn’t have access to it. Consult with your Power BI admin if you have any questions.
Displaying a Power BI Visualization in Carousel
Once you have your Power BI URL you can display it in Carousel using one of two ways.
A Web Picture Block allows you to select a portion of the visualization to display that will refresh every 15 minutes.
An Interactive bulletin allows you to display the whole visualization site live in the zone.
Follow one of the two methods below to set up your bulletin.
Web Picture Method
1. Create a Template with a Web Picture Block
In the example below, we will create a new Template from scratch, and add a Web Picture block to that template.
Your system may already have an appropriate Template that contains a Web Picture block. In that case, you can choose to start off with that template, and skip to the next step.
Log into Carousel Cloud and select the Zone in which you would like to display your Power BI data. Select Templates, then create a new template.
Create a new block in the template, then make its type Web Picture
Size your block accordingly and save it.
2. Create a Bulletin using the Web Picture Template
Next, we will create a new bulletin using the template you created in the previous step.
From the main menu, select New Bulletin, and select the template you created with the Web Picture block.
Click on Take Web Snapshot. In the dialog box that appears, paste in the Power BI URL you generated earlier.
Typically, Power BI reports take a little extra time to load so you’ll want to add a few extra seconds of delay. This will ensure the entire visualization loads before Carousel attempts to display it.
Click Continue, then select the area of the report you would like to display in Carousel. Finally, click Continue one more time.
3. Schedule your Bulletin
All that’s left to do now is to schedule your bulletin, and optionally apply any additional settings from the Extras tab. When you’re all done, click Publish to save your bulletin and queue it for display on your Zone.
3. Updates
The bulletin you created will automatically refresh the image you’ve selected every 15 minutes to reflect the current report in Power BI.
Interactive Bulletin Method
Carousel Player Requirements
When you create an interactive Bulletin, Carousel will tell your player to display a URL. It will go directly to the specified address from your player's network location. The Player will need to have HTTPS access to the Power BI URL you supply.
BrightSign and Windows Players use Chromium to display Interactive Bulletins. We generally recommend testing a URL with only one Bulletin in your rotation at first with the Inactivity Timeout set higher (300-600). AppleTV's do not support Interactive Bulletins at this time.
